lawmakers do plan to return to washington later this week to try to hammer out a last-minute deal. for now president obama and the first family are celebrating christmas in hawaii and that's where our ed henry is traveling with the president now live in honolulu. ed? bottom line the president is here in hawaii but might not be here for long. shortly after christmas likely to go back to washington. try and broker some sort of a deal. you remember before he left for hawaii, he announced that he wanted more of a short-term deal. sort of scaled back stop gap measure so that that big grand 4 trillion-dollar. instead he wanted to extend tax cuts for the middle class. he wanted to extend benefits for 2 million people that will lose those benefits a week after christmas. republicans are saying they think the president actually wants to go off the fiscal cliff for political gain. take a listen. when i listen to the president i think the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. additional tax revenue for new programs. he gets to cut the military which democrats have be

and to have the world just idly watching die as some people would say -- there is as you know a great deal of concern and even suspicion that syrian government forces may actually resort to using chemical weapons. president obama has warned there would be consequences if bashar al-assad's military conducts such chemical warfare. does that mean the u.s. may possibly consider eve enacting some military option in syria? >> i think what people are looking at is whether the chemical weapons can be secured or destroyed in place. this is very, very dangerous. one could argue that we should have focused on the chemical weapons a longtime allege. the other risk of course is the chemical weapons get outside of syria, fall into the hands of al-qaida or other terrorist and be used worldwide. it was a very dangerous situation. the pope was absolutely right to call attention to it. >> obviously you've talked to a lot of people 0 behind closed doors in terms of what is happening in syria and the entire middle east. what is going on here? why can't something, some resolution be found in this conflict? >>

the tax cut deal, big fights over the budget and the debt ceiling and deficit reduction and also the bin laden grade and reagan but happened in egypt and libya. so i'm looking at how obama made the decisions he made and why he took the actions he took in that very perilous time politically would also explain how this is all done in a way to set up the 2012 campaign that we just went through. he had a theory indy to do big hit in 2010, yet the theory that he could make the 2012 race a choice not just between him and mitt romney but a choice between different ideologies and different approaches to government and values. everything he did in that timeframe he kept trying to tether to this big idea. when i wrote the book of course we didn't know how things were going to end up on november 6, 2012. i looked at how he developed his governing strategy and electoral strategy and it really dominated. this is the back story to what happened with this presidential campaign. >> david corn, showdown is his most recent book and we are here at the national press club.
